Leaving on a jet plane, don’t know when I’ll be back again!
Well with an extra 130,000 seats available it could be sooner than you think with Jetstar and Whitsunday Coast Airport today announcing a partnership that will see Jetstar commence a new Sydney service and add additional flights from both Melbourne and to the Whitsundays.
In April next year Jetstar will commence three return Sydney – Whitsundays services per week and will also add an additional service on their Melbourne-Whitsundays route and an additional three services per week on their Brisbane-Whitsundays route with a late afternoon flight to suit return business travel three times per week.
Whitsunday Regional council Mayor Andrew Willcox was “over the moon” about the new deal which will bring more than $84 million in increased economic spend into the region.
“This is a fantastic result for the Whitsundays and continues to build on council’s aims to focus on providing better connectivity for international visitors holidaying in Australia to spend time in our magical part of the world,” Cr Willcox said.
“The additional 130,000 seats continues the strong domestic growth of Whitsunday Coast Airport and our asset is now the only regional airport south of Townsville that will boast direct flights into Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne,” he said.
“The new route and additional services equates to more bums in beds and more people spending in our region’s businesses so it is a real economic boost.
“I spoke with Jetstar CEO Australia and New Zealand Dean Salter today and council looks forward to working collaboratively with them to ensure the new schedules continue to grow.
“We welcome and appreciate the confidence Jetstar have shown in joining and assisting the Whitsunday Region on our journey to become the leading tourism destination in Australia.”
Tourism Whitsunday CEO Craig Turner said the announcement of the additional flights into Whitsunday Coast Airport is an early Christmas present for our tourism industry and will deliver massive economic benefits to the region.
“The fantastic work that council and Jetstar have done to put this together over the past few months is to be applauded and it is a very good example of council working with our industry partners to deliver results for the Whitsundays’ tourism industry.”
To celebrate today’s announcement Jetstar is offering fares from just 59* one-way.
