Commencing international flight operations at Whitsunday Coast Airport was a priority for theQueensland State Government according to Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk.
The Premier and her Ministers were in Proserpine yesterday for a Country Community Cabinetmeeting and she spent today exploring the Whitsundays with Tourism Minister Kate Jones andWhitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox.
The trio inspected the new Heart Hotel and Gallery in Airlie Beach this morning before visiting the Port of Airlie.
Premier Palaszczuk said expanding the Whitsunday Coast Airport to accommodate internationalflights was a priority for her government.
She said the airport was a significant project for the state and her government wanted it to happen as soon as possible.
The Premier also acknowledged that an international airport would bring strong growth and create more jobs in the Whitsundays Region.
Mayor Andrew Willcox welcomed the support from the Premier and said his council was continuing to explore all possibilities for commencing international flights.
“This new council has undertaken significant due diligence investigating the process of delivering sustainable international operations at Whitsunday Coast Airport.
“We have undertaken unprecedented business case studies and scenario analysis so that we can deliver long term sustainable international operations.
“We acknowledge and appreciate the support of Premier Palaszczuk and her government as we all recognise our airport as not only the key regional economic driver but also a community asset that supports the Palaszczuk’s governments focus on jobs and innovation.”
However Mayor Willcox said there was a lot of water to go under the bridge to ensure the transition to international operations was financially viable and he would be sitting down with the state government again in coming weeks for further talks to progress the project.
