Construction of the Gregory River Bridge is well underway which has been jointly funded by the Federal Government and Whitsunday Regional Council to the value of $2.5 million.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said the Gregory River Bridge construction site has been officially handed over to Vassallo Constructions with works commencing on the major upgrade on 26 September.
“This project will deliver a new two span bridge and approaches adjacent to the existing bridge and the demolition of the old bridge once traffic has been switched over,” Cr Willcox said.
“It’s been a long wait to get this project underway and with the assistance of the Federal Government, we will soon be able to provide increased road safety and greater efficiency in freight and traffic movement for our region and access to essential services,” he said.
“The construction of the Gregory River Bridge will take at least six months, weather permitting, and we expect practical completion will be achieved by the end of January 2017.”
