Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney said a comparison of rates charges across a number of Queensland regional councils shows Whitsunday Regional Council has one of the lowest rates and services charges.
“We have conducted a comparison across some similar regional Council’s using aresidential owner occupier on a property with an Unimproved Capital Value (UCV) of$170,000 and a water consumption of 375kL per year,” Mayor Whitney said.
“At $3,288, Whitsunday residents will be pleased to know that the Whitsunday RegionalCouncil rates and charges are lower than Mackay $3,632, Burdekin $3,411 and Toowoomba $3,352 regional councils.
“Whitsunday Regional Council rates are also on par with Bundaberg $3,227 and Gympie$3,224 regional councils.
“Interestingly, despite a lot of concern locally around the two-tier water pricing system,Whitsunday Regional Council has much cheaper water charges than Mackay,Toowoomba, Gladstone, Gympie and Bundaberg.
“The rates charges calculated for Whitsunday Regional Council also include the $140 levyimposed to help repay the $10 million Queensland Treasury Corporation emergentfunding.
“Every regional council has its own challenges delivering basic services to their residentswhich incur varying costs dependent on the distance services need to travel to theratepayer, population density and other financial constraints of Council.
“The Whitsunday Regional Council is no different and our challenges have been welldocumented locally.
“We are pleased that despite these challenges Whitsunday Regional Council can still offercomparatively affordable rates so residents can continue to enjoy living in our beautifulregion,” she said.
The rates and charges comparison is based on publicly available information on eachCouncil’s website.
These comparisons are based on a residential owner occupier with a $170,000 UCV and375kL water usage per year and applying early payment discounts and levies whereapplicable.
