Whitsunday Regional Council has today approved funding of $50,000 to the Collinsville Community Association (CCA) to continue the employment of a Youth Activity Coordinator.
Councillor for Division 4 Peter Ramage said that the provision of funding for a Youth Activity Coordinator in Collinsville was an extremely important investment in the youth of Collinsville.
“The CCA was advised that their current funding stream for the position would cease as of March 2016 and further attempts to source alternative funding were unsuccessful,” Cr Ramage said.
“The Youth Activity Coordinator position provides support and mentoring to young people in Collinsville between the ages of 12 and 17,” he said.
“Having a strong support system and someone to talk to is encouraging for young people and helps them to make better decisions and successfully transition into adult life.
“The Coordinator as part of the Collinsville Youth Coalition also provides drug and alcohol free venues and events on a regular basis, giving the Collinsville youth a place to have fun and enjoy some social interaction.
“Collinsville is a small town and the youth here don’t have direct access to organisations such as the PCYC. If we didn’t have the Youth Activity Coordinator and the youth centre, our children would be severely disadvantaged.”
The provision of financial support by Council will be reviewed after 30 June 2017.
