Whitsunday Regional Council has officially welcomed 22 new Australians at a citizenship ceremony held at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre today.
Mayor Andrew Willcox, who presided at the ceremony, congratulated the local residents who took the final step toward becoming Australian citizens.
“The Whitsunday Region is renowned world-wide for its unique lifestyle and environment, and it’s a great honour to welcome new residents who have chosen to settle in our region and join our community,” Cr Willcox said.
“Each citizenship ceremony gives us a chance to remind ourselves of the freedoms, rights and responsibilities which Australian citizenship provides, and I commend our 22 new local citizens for their commitment to both Australia and the Whitsunday community,” he said.
“Our community is enriched by the experiences, skills and customs these new residents bring to our region.”
Our region’s newest citizens originated from six countries, including the Philippines, United Kingdom, South Africa, Ireland, Thailand and Nigeria.
These local residents join around 136,572 people in the last year from at least 210 different countries to have become Australian citizens.
