Australia Day is a day for all Australians; to celebrate what makes us great, to consider where
we've come from, where we are now and what kind of a future we want to build together.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said Australia Day celebrations are a fun way to celebrate our heritage and to come together as a nation and enjoy what's great about Australia and being Australian.
“This year is also the celebration of a significant milestone for all Australians – the 65th anniversary of Australian citizenship,” Mayor Whitney said.
“Across the Whitsunday region we will welcome 32 people from 9 countries to officially join the
Australian family in ceremonies held in Proserpine, Collinsville and Bowen,” she said.
“Australia Day is the most popular day to become a citizen, with more than 17,000 people
expected to become citizens at about 430 special ceremonies across the nation,” she said.
“I hope the community take the opportunity to attend one of the free events being held across the Whitsunday region this Australia Day. I will be attending all events and we have a great day of festivities organised including the Australia Day Awards and Australian Citizenship Ceremonies.”
