Whitsunday Regional Council welcomes the announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss, that Aurecon Australasia has been selected to commence the detailed design phase of the Sandy Gully Bridge upgrade project.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said that news of the progress to the Sandy Gully Bridge upgrade project is fantastic for Bowen and for the Whitsunday region.
“Council has always had major concerns over the lack of flood immunity in this section of the Bruce Highway with regular road closures affecting the local community, tourists and the major industries that operate in the region such as freight operators for coal and agricultural produce,” Mayor Whitney said.
“The future economic prosperity of the Whitsunday region lies in our competitive advantages and having dependable and safe road networks to support our industries is a large part of that,” she said.
“Sandy Gully is a vital road network and this upgrade will provide large-scale efficiency improvements through the major reduction and the extent of road closures,” she said.“We look forward to seeing the project commence in 2016.”
As part of Council’s Corporate Plan Whitsunday 2020, Council has a strong focus on economic development including advocating for the implementation of the Bruce Highway Action Plan.
