Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney and North Queensland Sports Foundation
representative Alf Pearce today presented Kyra Domrow with her North Queensland Sportstar
Award in the Category of “Athlete with a Disability.”
“The North Queensland Sportstar Awards were announced at the end of March in Hughenden,
however, we are pleased to be able to present Kyra’s award to her today at her school assembly, in front of her peers,” she said.
“Kyra is an extraordinary athlete and is currently the national record holder for under 20s shot put and javelin for the F12 classification.
“At last year’s All Schools Championships in Adelaide in December Kyra won four gold medals and the new championship record for her classification, in the 100m, discus, shot put and long jump.
“Kyra regularly competes in national, state and regional competitions bringing home swags of
medals and her goal is to make the International Paralympic Committee World Championship in
Doha this year and then compete at the Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo Paralympic games.
“Because of her amazing achievements Council nominated Kyra for a North Queensland Sportstar Award under the category “Athlete with a Disability” and Kyra was chosen by the judges as the runner up of the category.
“It was a pleasure for us to present the trophy and a $500 prize to Kyra today at her assembly at
Bowen State High School.
“The North Queensland Sportstar Awards is an initiative of the North Queensland Sports
Foundation and is held annually to recognise and reward various individuals for their achievements during the year.
“Each year Council nominates community members throughout the region for particular categories who are invited to attend the North Queensland Sportstar Awards Ceremony.
“Judging of nominees is based on their achievements from regional events up to the international
stage.
“Points are allocated for the athlete’s accomplishments at each level of competition, with
international obviously scoring the most with all adding up to an accumulative total.
