Whitsunday Regional Council will again provide $5,000 financial support and a further $5,000 in kind support for the Bowen Offshore Superboat Championships to be held from 17 – 19 July, 2015.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said after the success of last year’s championship, which saw thousands of people flock to the region to see these high powered machines, Council was keen to support this event and return the boats to Bowen.
“The Championship is the largest on-water event in Bowen with up to 15 boats over four classes competing,” she said.
“The Bowen Superboats is a free community event allowing the whole community to attend this exhilarating spectacle where boats reach in excess of 200 km/hr.
“This event will put the focus directly on the Bowen Marina and Foreshore, providing racing fans with the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Superboats and their drivers,” she said.
Bowen Tourism and Business Chairman, Paul McLaughlin said he was very pleased Council were on board again this year.
“The augural event last year was a great success, and this year will be bigger and better again,” he said.
“While we have a fantastic crew of volunteers working on this event, we still need funds to make it happen and the support of Council along with our other major sponsors is very much appreciated.
“For those wanting a taste of what to expect, tune into Queensland Weekender on Channel 7 Saturday afternoon to watch the Bowen Offshore race from last year.”
