Whitsunday Regional Council encourages the local community to attend one of the eight ANZAC Day services which will be held through the region this ANZAC Day.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said on the 25th April this year we not only commemorate ANZAC Day we also mark the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli.
“We expect there will be a big attendance at all ANZAC Day events this year due to the 100th anniversary and encourage the local community to help mark this very special occasion,” she said.
“The ANZAC Centenary is a milestone of special significance to all Australians, as the First World War helped define us as people and as a nation.
“Through the ANZAC Centenary we will remember not only the original ANZACs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but commemorate more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and women.
“ANZAC Day is the day on which we remember Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations around the world.
“The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
“Through the ANZAC spirit we teach our next generation these important Australian qualities, but also teach our children about the sacrifices which have been made by previous generations, to provide the peaceful, free country we all enjoy today.
“I encourage everyone to attend a service, I will be attending the dawn service in Proserpine and the main service in Bowen, with Councillors attending their local services across the region,” she said.
