The new extended library hours for Whitsunday Regional Libraries begin this week culminatingwith the opening of Bowen library on a Saturday for the first time this weekend.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney said she is pleased Council has been able to respond to community demand and open Bowen library on Saturday mornings.
“This Saturday 7th February we are celebrating Bowen library’s Saturday grand opening andinviting the community to attend and join in the festivities,” she said.
“Council is pleased to be able to offer a weekend library service to the people of Bowen, which Iknow has been requested by the community for some time.
“We have never had Bowen library open on Saturdays before, but I know the local community will gladly take advantage of these extended hours.
“The first book sale of the year will also be held on Saturday morning at Bowen library, so I urgeinterested members of the community to come along and support their local library,” she said.
Mayor Whitney said the extended library hours for the four Whitsunday Regional Libraries will also begin this week after being approved by Council last year.
“All four Whitsunday Regional Libraries will now be open from 8.15am to 4.45pm Monday toFriday, extending the opening times in Bowen, Cannonvale and Proserpine which were 9am4.30pm,” she said.
“The Cannonvale and Proserpine libraries current opening times on Saturday mornings will alsobe extended to 8.45am to 11.45am, from 9am to 11.30am.
“Library hours at Collinsville will not change from the current 8.15am to 4.45pm Monday to Friday.
“Across the entire Whitsunday region the changes result in an additional 19 hours of libraryservices for the local community,” she said.
