Queensland Rail is celebrating 150 years of rail in Queensland by conducting steam train journeys
along the Queensland coast over the next couple of months.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said Queensland Rail has kindly offered members of the Whitsunday
community 200 free tickets for the Proserpine to Bowen leg on Sunday the 1st February.
“This is a great opportunity for train enthusiasts or interested members of the public to ride on an
old fashioned steam train and take part in the Rail 150 celebrations,” she said.
“We anticipate that there will be lots of community interest in these free tickets, which will be
allocated on a first in best dressed basis, by contacting Whitsunday Regional Council.
“The steam train will be arriving at Proserpine Railway Station on Sunday 1st February at 12.01pm and departing at 12.46pm.
“To help celebrate Rail 150, Council is also organising free community activities at Proserpine
Railway Station for the 45 minutes the train is at the station, so even if you miss out on a free ticket to ride the train you can still take part in the celebrations.
“The Proserpine Lions Club will be holding a sausage sizzle, there will be a scone stall, the
Proserpine Citizens Band will play and a Story Board of the history of Queensland Rail in the
Whitsunday region will be unveiled.
“The steam train will arrive at Bowen Railway Station at 2.30pm and will be departing again at
2.40pm.
“Due to the limited time in Queensland Rail’s schedule at Bowen Railway Station, Council will be
inviting local school children and members of the community to greet the train, before it departs
again.
“Passengers lucky enough to secure a free ticket from Proserpine to Bowen on the steam train will need to arrange their own transport to and from Proserpine as required,” she said.
Community members interested in free tickets should ring Tammy McDonald at Whitsunday
Regional Council on 4945 0602.
