Last Council meeting, the Whitsunday Regional Council resolved to adopt the draft WhitsundayRegional Council Planning Scheme for the purpose of undertaking statutory state interest review.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said a new modern planning scheme for the whole region is needed toaddress a number of growth factors in the Whitsunday region including increases in population,growth in the tourism industry, international investment, proposed Port of Abbot Point expansionand development of the Whitsunday Coast Airport to international status.
“Implementation of a single planning scheme for the whole region will streamline developmentapprovals and address out of date provisions in the existing two schemes,” she said.
“The new planning scheme will achieve liveable communities and housing; economic growth;protect environment and heritage; reduce hazards and increase safety; and develop transport and infrastructure.
“Since the local government amalgamations in 2008 the Council has operated with two planningschemes to manage land use planning, development and infrastructure delivery for the region, the Bowen Shire Planning Scheme 2006 and Whitsunday Shire Planning Scheme 2009.
“Work on the preparation of the new single Whitsunday Regional Council Planning Schemecommenced in April 2013, with Council formally resolving to prepare a new planning scheme at its ordinary meeting on the 9 April 2014.
“Council aims to have the new planning scheme completed and in place by early 2016.
“Council’s adoption of the draft planning scheme allows it to be submitted to the Minister of StateDevelopment, Infrastructure and Planning for state interest review.
“The draft planning scheme is now available on Council’s website for information purposes.
“Extensive consultation will be carried out on the draft planning scheme across the entireWhitsunday region next year,” she said.
