Tomorrow, Whitsunday Regional Council Chief Executive Officer will attend and present asubmission to the Productivity Commission inquiry into Natural Disaster Funding arrangements in Townsville.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the inquiry in Townsville follows the Productivity Commissions’ recentrelease of their draft report into Natural Disaster Funding.
“In this draft report the Productivity Commission identified that the Federal Government’scontribution to disaster recovery overinvests in post-disaster reconstruction, and underinvest inmitigation to limit the impact of natural disasters in the first place,” she said.
“While council appreciates that the Federal Government’s contribution to disaster recovery is huge, any reduction in funding from the Federal Government to help reconstruct after an event would be devastating for communities like the Whitsunday region.
“Council’s CEO will present a submission outlining Whitsunday Regional Council’s uniqueexperiences in recent years implementing the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangement (NDRRA) road programs for the 2009, 2010 and 2011 years.
“Council’s submission includes a number of recommendations for the Productivity Commission to consider around governance, day labour, coordination and event categorisation and claimprocesses,” she said.
Mayor Whitney said Council received correspondence from the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) advising that they will be making a submission to the ProductivityCommission.
“While it is appreciated that the LGAQ is presenting a submission on behalf of affectedCouncil’s, it has been determined that due to Whitsunday Regional Council’s unique experience for the 2009, 2010 and 2011 events, it would be more beneficial to conduct Council’s ownpresentation to address our specific concerns.
“The CEO will make a 20 minute presentation to the Commissioners, as part of the public hearing, it is open to the public and a transcript will be taken and posted on the Productivity Commission website,” she said.
