Whitsunday Regional Council today resolved to consider budget deliberations for the part funding and provision of in-kind support for the facilitation of a wheelchair elevator at the Whitsunday Voluntary Marine Rescue (VMR) building.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the Council is also calling on the State Member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan to pursue grant funding options and match any funding Council makes available to help provide this important community service.
“Currently, VMR cannot attract any volunteers to man the radio at the Whitsunday VMR, whichmeans if boaties get in to trouble at sea they have to radio Mackay,” she said.
“The Endeavour Foundation has indicated they have volunteers which can be trained to deliver this radio service for the community, however, a wheelchair elevator will be required at the VMRbuilding to enable access by the Endeavour volunteers.
“On basic costings Council has received, the total expenditure would be in the vicinity of $90,000.
“The provision of volunteers by the Endeavour Foundation to assist with radio services atWhitsunday VMR would be a win-win situation for boaties, VMR, Endeavour volunteers andultimately the community.
“Council will now look at what grants or funding are available to help get this project off the ground and I urge Mr Costigan to do the same through the State Government,” she said.
