Whitsunday Regional Council today adopted the Whitsunday Destination Tourism Plan, preparedby Whitsunday Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL).
Mayor Jenny Whitney said Council will now also meet with Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey and the Chief Executive Officer of Tourism and Events Queensland to discuss the delivery of theWhitsunday Destination Tourism Plan and its prioritisation of Council owned tourism enablinginfrastructure.
“The Whitsunday Destination Tourism Plan has been formed via extensive consultation withtourism operators and stakeholders and was presented to Council by WMDL’s CEO DanialRochford at the last Council meeting,” she said.
The top opportunities identified in the Whitsunday Destination Tourism Plan include:
1. Regional population growth2. Optimise the regions marketing outcomes3. Product and facilities development4. Events development5. Developing drive tourism6. International access potential of Whitsunday Coast Airport
Mayor Whitney said the WMDL presentation to Council detailed the direction of the industry andthe importance of ensuring that Whitsunday Regional Council is part of the tourism industry’sgrowth.
“It is imperative that the priorities of the industry continue to align with those of Council to ensurethat the region is focused on delivering the 2020 targets for tourism growth,” she said.
“The number one priority to Council is the development of Whitsunday Coast Airport to ensureaccess opportunities are grown and international status is achieved.
“Increased access to the Whitsunday Coast Airport is seen as the key component requirement for tourism industry growth in the Whitsunday region.
“In addition, the development of an integrated resort development is increasingly important, adevelopment of this magnitude would update the existing tourism product on offer, and alsoprovided much needed construction activity and employment to the region,” she said.
The Whitsunday Destination Tourism Plan will be made available to the public by WMDL by theend of October.
