Whitsunday Regional Council today approved an application by Humphries Pty Ltd, for theextraction of 15,000 cubic metres of sand a year from the Don River bed.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said this follows the approval last month of an application by Fynbat Pty Ltd to extract 50,000 cubic metres of sand per annum from the Don River.
“The new extraction site lies between Millers Lane and Taloonda Road and is centredon the large sand deposits which are adversely affecting the hydraulic characteristics of theDon River when flowing,” she said.
“The Queensland Government and Council agreed that removal of the sand deposits would be apositive outcome for improving the flow characteristics of the Don River.
“Combined with last month’s approval, this extraction will be particularly beneficial in times of high rainfall when the river has been known to rise extremely quickly and sand deposits can exacerbate flooding issues in Bowen and surrounding areas,” she said.
Sand extraction operations will occur between 7am and 5pm Monday to Saturday.
The extraction of material from the Don River is seasonally dependent and will commence after the wet season when there is no water flow in the Don River, typically between March and November.
