Whitsunday Regional Council together with the Bowen RSL Sub Branch will welcome HMASTarakan personnel to the region when the ship docks in Bowen from this Friday 25 July.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said HMAS Tarakan had moored in its adopted township of Bowen for anumber of years but this will be its last time as the ship will be decommissioned following thecompletion of this journey.
“The arrival of Tarakan is always something that the locals look forward to but this visit will be bitter sweet knowing it will be the last time,” she said.
While the ship is moored in Bowen a number of community events will take place over theweekend and community members are encouraged to come down and join in the festivities.
Community members are invited to attend a Ship Open Day at Bowen Wharf on Saturday 26 July from 9am – 12pm, providing the community with an opportunity to board HMAS Tarakan.
On Sunday 27 July personnel of the Tarakan will perform a Freedom of Entry march along Herbert Street at approximately 10am, followed by a community BBQ on the Bowen foreshore beside the Sound Shell from 12:30pm onwards.
