Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney said she is very pleased Whitsunday CoastAirport is consistently in the top 10 best performing airports in the monthly Airline on timePerformance Reports.
“April’s report shows Whitsunday Coast Airport is number two in the country for on time departures and number eight in the country for on time arrivals,” Mayor Whitney said.
“This shows how efficiently our airport crews work to ensure passengers have a smooth andseamless journey to and from our beautiful region.
“The April report also shows that the Whitsunday Coast Airport is the best performing on timeairport in Queensland, for both arrivals and departures.
“These great performance figures are on top of last week’s report of a 16% increase in passenger numbers in April 2014 compared to April 2013,” she said.
Mayor Whitney said good performance figures for the Whitsunday Coast Airport is fantastic news for the region as the airport is the single most important piece of infrastructure in the region to grow tourism and economic development.
“The Council is working with airlines and investors to expand existing flight routes, add new routes and develop the airport itself, with the aim of upgrading the airport to international status as the Whitsunday Coast International Export Hub,” she said.
“Whitsunday Regional Council is also in discussions with the Queensland Government regardingdesignating the Whitsunday Coast Airport as a Priority Development Area (PDA).
“A PDA for the Whitsunday Coast Airport will maximise the economic and developmentopportunities of this key precinct, expanding the developable size from 430 hectares to over 1000 hectares, creating a unique precinct on the East Coast of Australia with direct access to the North Coast Railway Line and the Bruce Highway.
“A PDA for the Whitsunday Coast Airport will make any potential future expansion of the terminalor runway at the airport much easier,” she said.
