Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney said she is very pleased Whitsunday CoastAirport experienced a 16% increase in passengers in April 2014 compared to April 2013.
“The April passenger numbers for this year are also on par with the best April passenger numbers on record for the Whitsunday Coast Airport,” Mayor Whitney said.
“A large part of the huge boost in passenger numbers is due to Tiger Air commencing direct flights between the Whitsunday Coast and Sydney on April 1st this year.
“Jetstar and Virgin Australia flights have also been bringing good numbers of passengers to theWhitsunday region, with a bumper Easter period positively affecting the region's tourism industry.
“This increase in passenger numbers is extremely pleasing given that the region experienced the significant weather event of Cyclone Ita during this April period.
“I think this shows economic confidence is returning and tourism numbers to our beautifulWhitsunday region are bouncing back to pre-global financial crisis levels,” she said.
Mayor Whitney said growth in passenger numbers through the Whitsunday Coast Airport isfantastic news for the region as the airport is the single most important piece of infrastructure in the region to grow tourism and economic development.
“The Council is working with airlines and investors to expand existing flight routes, add new routes and develop the airport itself, with the aim of upgrading the airport to international status as the Whitsunday Coast International Export Hub,” she said.
“Whitsunday Regional Council is also in discussions with the Queensland Government regardingdesignating the Whitsunday Coast Airport as a Priority Development Area (PDA).
“A PDA for the Whitsunday Coast Airport will maximise the economic and developmentopportunities of this key precinct, expanding the developable size from 430 hectares to over 1000 hectares, creating a unique precinct on the East Coast of Australia with direct access to the North Coast Railway Line and the Bruce Highway.
“A PDA for the Whitsunday Coast Airport will make any potential future expansion of the terminalor runway at the airport much easier.
“Local residents looking at taking advantage of Tiger Air’s direct flights to Sydney are remindedthey are holding a 2 for 1 sale on all domestic flights until midnight on the 21st May,” she said.
