Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jennifer Whitney said thank you to Council workers, Main
Roads engineers and the Queensland Police Service for acting so swiftly to fix the road damage
which closed the Bruce Highway overnight.
Mayor Whitney said last night Council workers from our Bowen depot identified a dip in the
Highway at Kangaroo Creek, 20km south of Bowen, that grew over time creating a serious issue.
“I’d like to thank Council workers, Main Roads engineers and the Queensland Police Service for
working collaboratively through the night to rectify the issue,” Mayor Whitney said.
“The crew from the Bowen depot identified the issue last night and acted to close the road before the situation escalated, potentially averting an accident on the highway.
“We’re pleased the damage has been fixed so quickly and the Bruce Highway has been able to
open, as it is the only connecting corridor between Proserpine and Bowen in the Whitsunday local government area,” she said.
