The record number of travellers utilising Whitsunday Coast Airport will enjoy new facilities late next year after an EOI (Expressions of Interest) for the terminal expansion were approved.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said with the airport on track to hit 500,000 passengers per annum next year it was important the terminal could cater for the rapid growth.
“This huge increase in passenger numbers makes Whitsunday Coast Airport one of the fastest growing regional airports in Australia,” he said.
“Project architects STEA Astute have held stakeholder workshops and have a detailed expanded terminal concept design.
The next step is to call for an EOI for construction of the terminal expansion which is due for completion by October next year.
Mayor Willcox thanked the Qld State Government for their support in funding the $15 million project.
“This expansion is guaranteed to improve the customer experience of all passengers passing through the Whitsunday Coast Airport,” he said.
“The terminal expansion will complement the recent $25 million runway upgrade which means more jobs for our region.
“Over 20 local sub-contractors and suppliers shared in the runway with more than $4 million in contracts awarded under my council’s local buy policy.
“I am very proud of our local buy policy which supports regional business which equates to creating jobs for locals,” he said.
The concept terminal expansion will include doubling the size of the departure lounge and the baggage claim and arrivals areas, provision of an additional departure gate and reconfigured and expanded security screening area to allow for a future double lane of security screening.
