Proserpine’s future is looking bright, after the draft Proserpine Sustainability and Future Growth Master Plan was received today at the Whitsunday Regional Council meeting.
The Master Plan outlines a blueprint for the sustainable growth and development of Proserpine, and was prepared after extensive consultation with the community between November 2016 and February 2017.
The draft Plan will now be placed on public exhibition for a period of 10 days until midnight Sunday 24 September, with the final report to be adopted by Council at the following Council meeting.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said late last year Council made a commitment to the future direction of Proserpine by developing a Master Plan.
“This is a new set of community inspired projects that will work to further shape future the growth and sustainability for Proserpine,” he said
Five key themes were identified by the draft plan, with 13 major projects recommended in the report.
“The key areas for growth include activating Lake Proserpine, upgrades to Parks and Tourist Facilities, a History and Walking Trail, RV Park/Rest Stop and Information Signage/Centre.”
Deputy Mayor and Division 3 councillor John Collins said this is an exciting step forward for the Proserpine community.
“There is no doubt that the challenges presented by Cyclone Debbie and devastation left in her wake have been a significant setback for many as we continue with recovery efforts to return to business as usual.
“And whilst this Plan is not a solution to fix all, it will be a catalyst for renewed energy, appeal and sustainable growth for the Proserpine area,” Cr Collins said.
A total of 114 submissions were made by the community during the three month consultation process, showing the passion and support of the local residents for town improvements.
The submissions were assessed against key criteria including timing, constraints, pros and cons, environmentally feasible aspects, cultural identity feasibility, financial budgeting and the need for further investigations.
