Whitsunday Regional Council today resolved to prepare the new Whitsunday Regional Councilplanning scheme.
Mayor Jennifer Whitney said Council would provide written advice to the Minister for StateDevelopment Infrastructure and Planning in accordance with the relevant statutory guidelines toadvise of Council’s intention to prepare a new planning scheme and identify relevant state interests that must be taken into account as part of this process.
“In preparing the new planning scheme Council is required to take into account matters relevant to economic growth, environment and heritage, hazards and safety and infrastructure,” she said.
“The development of a new single planning scheme for the whole Whitsunday Regional Councilarea is a step towards better consistency in planning across the entire region.
“Since local government amalgamations in 2008 the Whitsunday Regional Council has operatedwith two planning schemes the; Bowen Shire Planning Scheme 2006 and the Whitsunday ShirePlanning Scheme 2009.
“In order to move towards a more consistent approach to undertaking and regulating development, Council has committed to develop a new single planning scheme by 2016.
“Early work on the new planning scheme has been taking place over the last year and Council isnow at the stage where it is suitable to commence the statutory plan making process in partnership with the Queensland Government.
“The new planning scheme will guide our current and future development in the region, allowing for the growing demands of our community and enhancing development opportunities,” she said.
