A delegation from Whitsunday Regional Council and Whitsunday Coast Airport will host more than 50 Mackay travel agents and media on Wednesday in Mackay.
Mayor Andrew Willcox, CEO Barry Omundson, WCA Acting General Manager Glenn Robinson and Tourism Whitsundays CEO Craig Turner will launch a new airport marketing campaign aimed at attracting regional airline travellers.
The delegation will host a Fly Whitsunday meet and greet cocktail function at The Dispensary and update stakeholders on progress of the recently commenced $40 million Whitsunday Coast Airport runway upgrade and terminal expansion.
A three month TV and radio marketing campaign will be launched at the function targeting potential flyers within a two hour drive radius of the Whitsunday Coast Airport.
The digital initiative will be supported by an extensive regional billboard campaign.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said the digital and billboard marketing campaign would also raise the awareness regionally that Whitsunday Coast Airport is now the only mainland regional airport between Townsville and the Sunshine Coast offering low cost direct jet only flights to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
“Council’s proactive negotiations and collaborations over the past year have resulted in Jetstar and Tigerair introducing new routes and also adding extra flights on established routes,” he said.
“That is 240,000 extra domestic visitor seats annually which will bring more than $160 million in increased economic spend within the Whitsunday Region.
“Quite simply that means more visitors, more passengers, more flight options, more dollars spent in region and most importantly, more jobs for Whitsunday residents,” Mayor Willcox said.
As part of the marketing campaign people arriving and departing from Whitsunday Coast Airport in August, September and October will have the chance to win one of three trips for two people including flights and accommodation to attend the 2017 Rugby League World Cup final on December 2.
