Women's Work Camp

The Townsville Correctional Centre's Bowen Women's Work Camp was established in Bowen in 2007.

The camp was opened on 28 June 2007 with an official function attended by the Mayor of Bowen, the Officer in Charge of Bowen Police Station, representatives of the Townsville Correctional Centre and 9 female prisoners.
The region is one of only two areas in Queensland to host a female Department of Corrective Services Work Camp. The Work Camp is proving to be highly successful amongst local members of the community and community/sporting groups alike.

By having a source of labour to undertake projects or community work that would otherwise not be completed is a major benefit to our community. The Work Camp team perform a multitude of tasks including maintenance of fences, cemeteries, playgrounds and showgrounds and they also participate in many restoration and general maintenance projects.

The primary objectives of the program are to:
• provide reparation to the community by engaging offenders in constructive employment on projects that enhance community life and maintain community assets
• enable offenders to develop work and life skills that may increase their chances of successful re-integration into the community on release
• encourage offenders to develop a work ethic by engaging them in regular work practices and encouraging self responsibility

The Women's Work Camp program has seen many improvements to our region including the award winning site of Flagstaff Hill which the Work Camp upgraded through the establishment of paths, seating and rotundas. Below is a list of some of the projects completed by the all-women team however, there are many more contributions to our community that are not listed here.

Other projects include:

• Queens Beach walking pathways
• Beautification of the Bowen Foreshore Skate Rink
• Renovations of the Bowen Sporting Complex and toilet blocks
• Fencing to Bowen Polocrosse
• Annual Bowen River Rodeo preparation
• Erosion control fencing at Queen's Beach
• Upgrade and maintenance of Cape Edgecombe walking track
• Painting of Bowen Show Ground buildings
• Refurbishment of town square wooden bench seating
• Rebuilding of the gardens and painting of the Bowen Christian Outreach Centre
• Extending cricket pitches of the Bowen Cricket Incorporation
• Maintenance of Bowen Aerodrome Precinct

Whitsunday Regional Council partners with Queensland Corrective Services to provide beneficial works projects for the community, and rehabilitate offenders with their return to society.
